    A journey for Umrah requires careful preparation, especially if this is your first visit to Saudi Arabia. Beyond flights and luggage, managing your energy, getting around and recognising official information in crowded places are all important.

    This guide covers organisational aspects only: it does not address rituals or rules of worship. Its aim is to help you set off with clear guidance and experience fewer practical surprises during your stay.

    When to travel: weather, crowds and the calendar

    In Mecca, the heat can have a considerable impact on your days. During the generally cooler months, walking and making transfers may be less demanding, but mild temperatures should not be taken for granted. Before departure, check the forecast and plan a schedule suited to your physical condition.

    During Ramadan and other busy periods, getting around can take longer. Allow extra time to reach meeting points and avoid fitting too many commitments into a single day.

    Religious occasions follow the lunar calendar: dates may differ by one day from predictions. In addition, specific rules on entry and stays may be introduced around Hajj. Check that your chosen period is compatible with the required authorisations, rather than relying on the rules from a previous trip.

    Documents and health: what to check beforehand

    Before purchasing services that cannot be changed, check the requirements applicable to your nationality, travel document and reason for your stay. Do not assume that an entry permit allows every activity or access at any time of year.

    Consult the Saudi Arabia country information on Viaggiare Sicuri and the guidance from the relevant Saudi authorities. Check them again close to departure: health requirements, digital procedures and entry rules may be updated.

    Prepare a folder, also accessible offline, containing:

    • your passport and copies of essential documents;
    • the visa or authorisations required for your journey;
    • flight and transfer confirmations;
    • your accommodation address, preferably also in Arabic;
    • any required health documentation;
    • assistance contacts and insurance documents.

    For vaccinations, treatments or chronic conditions, consult your doctor or a travel medicine clinic well in advance. If you are bringing medicines, also check Saudi rules on bringing in their active ingredients and the documentation that must accompany them.

    From Romagna to Mecca: organise each stage

    If you are departing from Rimini or elsewhere in Romagna, consider the entire journey, not just the international flight. The transfer to the Italian airport, any connecting flight and the journey after arrival can make for a long and tiring day.

    To reach Mecca, you may arrive via Jeddah; some itineraries also include Medina. Before departure, clarify where to meet your driver or tour escort, how to recognise them and which number to call if your flight is delayed.

    If your itinerary includes trains or other connections, check the service conditions, luggage rules and transfer between the station and your accommodation. When travelling with older people or those with reduced mobility, also check actual distances, accessibility and any assistance that needs to be requested in advance.

    On arrival: reliable information and meeting points

    In busy places, you may find screens, signs and announcements providing organisational information. Read them carefully, but check that they apply to your location and the time you are passing through. A message forwarded in a chat, perhaps referring to a different period, is no substitute for an up-to-date official announcement.

    For entry, routes and crowd management, follow the directions of authorised staff. If you do not understand a notice, ask for clarification before continuing, avoiding stopping in the busiest passageways.

    Agree on an easily recognisable meeting point with your group, along with an alternative in case it cannot be reached. Save your accommodation address on your phone and carry a paper copy: it may be useful if your battery runs out or there is no connection.

    Luggage and managing your energy

    Pack only what you need, keeping within your airline’s baggage allowances. Choose clothing suited to the climate and local context; for matters relating to religious dress, consult a knowledgeable person.

    For everyday needs, the following may be useful:

    • comfortable footwear for transfers;
    • a lightweight bag that closes securely;
    • a charger, a compatible adapter and a power bank that complies with the carrier’s rules;
    • personal medicines in their original packaging;
    • sunscreen and toiletries in permitted sizes.

    Alternate activity with rest, drink regularly according to your needs and do not wait until you are exhausted to stop. If you feel unwell or experience unusual symptoms, seek medical assistance: do not automatically put them down to tiredness.

    The final check before departure

    In the final days, reconfirm times, terminals, transfers and contact details. Check how you will stay connected and what charges or limits your mobile provider applies. Share your itinerary with a family member and keep useful contacts on paper too.

    To prepare the organisational aspects, you can consult the page dedicated to Umrah. A well-organised departure leaves room for what matters to you, without turning every small logistical step into a difficulty.
